Brownsburg 31, Hamilton SE 28

Play of the Game

He couldn't quite get it in the end zone, but Brownsburg running back Garrett Sherrell's 41-yard run early in the fourth quarter led to the Bulldogs winning touchdown one play later. Sherrell takes the hand off, starts toward the interior of his offensive line and bounces outside. The sophom*ore gets a great block from his pulling right guard, stiff arms a would be tackler and breaks into the open field. Sherrell puts a great move on a defender at the 14-yard line, juking and fighting his way to the 3-yard line before diving to the 1.

Sam Jacobs' 78-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Conner was a close second to Sherrell's run. Owen Jones' 54-yard catch and run for a score also deserves recognition.

Turning Point

This game featured five lead changes, but the biggest turning point happened late in thethird quarter and into the fourth quarter. HSE scored on its final possession of the first half and its opening possession of the second half, taking a 28-17 lead with 8:01 left in the third. The Bulldogs used a methodical 13-play drive, capped by Jayden Whitaker's 10-yard touchdown run to shrink their deficit to four. Brownsburg's defense tightened after Whitaker's score, forcing two punts and a turnover on downs on HSE's final three offensive possessions.

Player of the Game: Garrett Sherrell

R.J. Myles sealed the win with a tough run on fourth-and-short in the fourth quarter. Whitaker rushed for 45 yards and score while adding an efficient 11-of-18 for 134 yards passing. But I'm going with Sherrell's workhorse 22-carry, 120-yard rushing performance for my player of the game. — Akeem Glaspie

Roncalli 35, East Central 21

The Roncalli football team is heading into the postseason on a high note.

The Class 4A top-ranked Royals won their 21ststraight game and finished the regular season undefeated for the second straight season with a 35-21 win against No. 4 East Central. Roncalli scored two touchdowns in the final 4:34 to put the game away.

Junior running back Luke Hansen scored all three of the Royals’ second-half touchdowns and finished with 175 yards on 29 carries.

Roncalli (9-0), the defending state champions, will play at Western Friday in the first round of sectionals.

Play of the game

The Royals flashed a little trickery early in first quarter on their first scoring drive. From the Trojans’ 42-yard line, senior receiver Caden Gore, lined up behind center, threw a lateral to quarterback Aidan Leffler on the near sideline. Leffler fired the ball deep and connected with a wide open Kyle Lockard at the 5-yard line for the touchdown to help tie the game at 7-7.

Turning point

Both teams struggled to find the end zone in the second half, as heavy rain began falling. The Royals finally broke through on a nine-play, 41-yard drive that was capped by Hansen’s 3-yard TD run to help make the score 28-21. Hansen tacked on another touchdown in the game’s final minute.

Standout performer

You’d almost have to flip a coin to choose the star of the game for the Royals. Both quarterback Aidan Leffler and running back Luke Hansen shined. Hansen rushed for three touchdowns and 175 yards. Leffler finished 10-15 passing for 162 yards and rushed for 94 yards. — Tom Moor, Special for IndyStar

Carmel 14, Lawrence Central 0

Play off the game

In the first quarter, Carmel opened up the scoring when quarterback Zach Osborne connected with running back Ethan Hall on a 20-yard touchdown strike. Hall came out of the backfield on a perfectly executed wheel route and Osborne put the ball on the money.

Turning Point

With one minute remaining in the first half and Carmel holding a 14-0 lead, Lawrence Central linebacker Mataio Russell came up with a huge interception setting up the Bears deep inside Carmel territory. At that point it felt like the momentum was starting to shift to Lawrence Central, but the Bears offense failed to put any points on the board which was a recurringtheme all night long. Not being able to get on the scoreboard before halftime was a huge momentum killer and the Bears offense couldn't find any rhythm the rest of the game.

Standout Performer

The entire Carmel defense deserves a lot of credit for pitching the shutout. The Lawrence Central offense made multiple trips into the red zone, but each time the Greyhounds defense stood their ground and were able to get off the field unscathed. It was a classic bend but don't break game for the Carmel defense. They made all the critical plays when it mattered the most and they shut down the Bears talented quarterback Bryson Luter. — Michael Harley, Special for IndyStar

Eight weeks of struggles and a 21-0 deficit early in the second quarter weren’t enough to stop the determined Orioles (1-8, 1-6) as they rallied to knock off the visiting Millers (2-7, 0-7) in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference battle. Avon relied upon two defensive scores, a fumble return and a blocked punt, to notch decisive scores, while Mason Reynolds passed for three TDs for the victors.
